Citra Award for Best Director

The Citra Award for Best Director (Indonesian: ) is an award given at the Indonesian Film Festival (IFF) to Indonesian film directors in recognition for their achievements. The Citra Awards, described by ''Screen International'' as "Indonesia's equivalent to the Oscars",〔 〕 are the country's most prestigious film awards and are intended to recognise Indonesian achievements in film and draw the public's interest to the cinema industry. Initially winners were selected from all entries by a jury. Owing to efficiency concerns and widespread disapproval of winners within the Indonesian film industry, beginning in 1979 the IFF instituted a nomination system in which a committee selected the Citra Award recipients from a shortlist of four to six films. Since 1986 the shortlist has remained at five selections.
The Citra Awards, then known as the Indonesian Film Festival Awards, were first given at the IFF in early 1955; that year, Lilik Sudjio won Best Director for his film ''Tarmina''.〔 The festival was then held intermittently, in 1960 and 1967. In 1973 the festival began to be held annually. This continued uninterrupted until after the 1992 IFF, when a sharp decline in film production led the festival to be discontinued. It was reinstated as an annual event in 2004, after receiving funds from the Indonesian government.〔 The most recent winner is Herwin Novianto, who won a Citra Award at the 2012 IFF for his direction of ''Tanah Surga... Katanya''.〔
A total of 58 directors have been nominated for a Citra Award, 22 of whom have won at least one. all recipients have been men, although female directors have competed since Ida Farida received a nomination in 1989 for her romance ''Semua Sayang Kamu''.〔 The most recognised director at the IFF has been Teguh Karya, who won six awards out of nine nominations beginning with ''Cinta Pertama'' in 1974.〔 Four other directors have won multiple Citra Awards: Arifin C. Noer, Hanung Bramantyo, Sjumandjaja, and Slamet Rahardjo. Three directors (Eduart Pesta Sirait, Sophan Sophiaan, and Teddy Soeriaatmadja) have received three nominations without winning. The award has been revoked once, in 2007, after Nayato Fio Nuala's ''Ekskul'' was found to have violated copyright by reusing music from foreign films without permission.
